History of Valentines Day

Posted by Administrator on 1/21/2014
When you think about Valentines day, what comes into your mind?  Valentines Cards, roses, candy and dinner for two?

You may not know there is a history about Valentines Day that goes back nearly 2000 years. Although the exact details are not 100% clear, it appears that there really was a man named Valentine who was a Bishop in the newly established Christian Church. He had been thrown into the dungeon awaiting his execution for refusing to worship the Emperor of Rome who had declared himself a god.

While in prison he fell in love with the jailor's beautiful daughter, and apparently she returned his love. Before he was let out to be executed, he wrote his sweetheart one final letter, declaring his love, and signing it, “from your Valentine”. This is the same expression that today's lovers will sign their in their cards to each other.

In the Fifth century, the Pope officially declared that the martyr Valentine was to be a Saint in the Church and that February 14th was thereafter to be “St Valentines Day.”
